| Breathtakingly Beautiful Weligama BayOf all the beaches, Weligama gets my vote as the absolute best of them all. Beaches are unspoiled and beautiful - get here quick - the tourists haven't found it yet!!! Weligama is a fishing town in Matara district on the southern coast of Sri Lanka, about 15 miles (24) Km south of Galle, along majestic coconut groves. Weligama Bay is breathtakingly beautiful. It is no wonder that the famous German scientist philosopher Ernst Haekel, who in 1882 set up a marine zoological laboratory, called this secluded haven "Bella Gemma" the lovely gem. While the tour books shows Weligama as the home of Sri Lanka's unique stilt fishermen, these are actually found up the coast in Koggala.
