India's largest diamond cutting center, Surat is also noted for its apparel manufacturing. It is a medium-sized city a 3-hour train ride south from Mumbai.

I visited Surat in October 2003 on a business trip. It is a religious city, and all stores are closed on Sunday when I arrived, so I had to content myself with walking around and watching the people. They were beautiful, friendly and open.
