| Kathmandu's Durbar Square - The Heart of the Old City and a Living Museum of NepalKathmandu's Hanuman-dhoka Durbar Square, with more than 50 temples and monuments packed into its compact area, is at the heart of the old city and top of the list of most people's sightseeing itineraries. It is a complex of beautiful temples and shrines, both Hindu and Buddhist. Most were built in the pagoda style embellished with intricatedly carved exteriors, constructed between the 12th and 18th centuries. It is here that kings of Nepal were crowned and their coronations solemnized. Until the early 20th century Durbar Square was the King's residence. It is a living open museum of Nepal.
